"When are you interviewing Haim?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's fourth member. And we're far from alone. Multiple famous supporters have also begged for the role.

It's clear something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos repeatedly depict them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to make music."

"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the honorary member of Haim."

Award Nod

The group have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The words track breakups and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed resilience demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

But Haim will consistently be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
