The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team might be building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
