The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Because my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or nerve to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
